Christophe Coppens is a Belgian multi-disciplinary artist, opera director, and fashion designer.
Trained initially as a theatre director, Coppens started his own label as an accessories designer at the age of 21, a career that would span over 20 years with several outlets, international press following and buyers the world over, and that he would combine and nurture with his first stunts and solo shows as an artist.
Career Evolution
Fashion and Millinery (1990–2012): Originally trained as a theatre director and actor, he shifted unexpectedly into fashion at age 21. For over two decades, he ran his own global accessories label, becoming world-renowned for his experimental accessories collections. He designed couture headwear for icons like Rihanna, Grace Jones, and Róisín Murphy, created custom pieces for the Belgian Royal Family, and collaborated with designers like JuunJ, Alber Elbaz, Issey Miyake, Manish Arora…
The Pivot to Fine Art (2012–Present): In 2012, at the peak of his commercial fashion career, Coppens abruptly closed his label to focus entirely on visual arts. His artwork spans sculptures, textiled canvases, installations, and paintings. A practice that is strongly material based with focus on complex, autobiographical and deeper themes through a characteristically provocative, surreal lens.
Opera Directing (2017–Present): Coppens came full circle back to his theatrical roots when he debuted as an opera director for the prestigious Brussels opera house, La Monnaie / De Munt. Known for fully immersive storytelling, he directs the productions and completely designs the costumes and sets. His notable opera productions include:
The Cunning Little Vixen (2017)
Bluebeard’s Castle / The Miraculous Mandarin (2018)
Norma (2021 and 2025)
Turandot (2024
Wozzeck (2026)
SUPERSAUCE (2024-Present) Together with his partner, Javier Barcala, they founded SUPERSAUCE, a global creative studio, crafting elevated visual storytelling through premium experiences, installations, curated spaces, shows, films, 360 campaigns, product design and more…
